Carson City

Jazz Band presents Jazz and Poetry program

The Mile High Jazz Band and vocalist Sheryl Adams will be joined by local poets for an evening of "Jazz and Poetry" at Comma Coffee from 8-10 p.m. Sept. 20.

Admission is $5 general, $4 for members of the Mile High Jazz Band Association and free for ages 18 and under.

Swing dance instruction will be offered from 6-7:30 p.m. for $5.

Classical Music at Brewery Arts Center

The Brewery Arts Center Classical Music Program will present Silver Strings at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 25 in the BAC Performance Hall. Tickets are $15 general and $12 for BAC members, seniors, and students.

Youth theater sessions start soon

The next session of "Get in the Act" fall acting classes at Brewery Arts Performing Arts Hall will be Sept. 14-Dec. 7. Ages 3-5 meet from 2:30-3:30 p.m. and ages 5-8 from 3:30-4:30 p.m.

Classes introduce children to the world of the performing arts through dance, acting and singing while encouraging young performers to develop their skills in imagination, vocabulary, teamwork and coordination.

Tuition is $135 for 12 weeks.

Golf tournament to benefit Community Counseling Center

The Community Counseling Center is holding its 18th golf tournament Oct. 2, at Empire Ranch Golf Course.

The tournament will benefit counseling and substance abuse treatment programs for adults and adolescents in Carson City and Douglas County.

Dayton

Dance classes begin in September

Dancers can pirouette with the Sugar Plum Fairy and waltz with the Snow Flakes in "The Nutcracker" ballet at historic Piper's Opera House Virginia City with the Central Lyon Parks and Recreation Dance Project.

Classes in classical ballet (Russian technique), Broadway jazz, lyrical dance and kinderdance start Sept. 7 at the Dayton Community Center, 170 Pike St. in Old Town Dayton.

Sessions, which are taught by professional ballerina Carolyn Oliver are Mondays and Wednesdays after school hours for boys and girls ages 5 through adults, beginners to advanced.

Tuition is $44 per month for eight or nine classes.

Family rate is half tuition for each member of the same family. There are no other fees.
