Dayton wins tournament title

The Dayton High boys basketball team picked up an impressive 61-49 win over Liberty of Brentwood to winning its own Sutro Classic on Saturday.

Jordan Stokes was named the tournament most valuable player and Josh Aaker and Erik Hopper were also named to the all-tournament team as Dayton went 4-0 in the event. Among others named to the all-tourney team were Silver Stage's Josh Tromerhauser, Andrew Hamlet for the Douglas junior varsity and Austin Chaney for Fernely.

Stokes scored 22 points to lead Dayton while Shane Castro added 13 points, sinking 6-of-6 foul shots. Hopper added eight points for the Dust Devils. Dayton outscored Liberty 20-10 in the third quarter to take a 43-27 lead. Dayton also had a huge advantage at the foul line, sinking 18-of-27 while Liberty was 6-of-11.

Dayton also beat Reno's JVs 77-63. Stokes scored 23 points, Josh Wagoner and Hopper each had 14 points and Travis Wood and Castro each added eight points.

In other games, Fernley beat the Douglas JVs 73-63. Dale Proctor scored 16 points, Chaney had 15 points, Kyle Thompson had 11 points and Matt Zumoff added 10 points for Fernley. James McLauglin scored 16 points and Nate Imelli had 14 points for Douglas.

Fernley dropped its other game 57-47 to North Tahoe. Brad Sanchez scored 13 points and Chaney added 10 points for the Vaqueros. The Douglas JVs dropped their other game 43-29 to North Tahoe.

Silver Stage dropped both of its games, losing to Battle Mountain 62-53 and Bishop, Calif., 45-34. John Allred scored 12 points against Bishop. Tromerhauser scored 15 points and Israel Blanco added 10 points against Battle Mountain.

In other scores, Bishop defeated Battle Mountain 50-47 and Liberty beat Reno High's JVs 80-73.

LOGAN 65, GALENA 59

The third quarter proved to be Galena's demise as it concluded its tough road swing against two of Utah's top teams. Galena was coming off a 64-54 loss to Orem, ranked No. 1 in the state. Logan is No. 3 in the state and featured many players from its state championship football team.

Galena coach Tom Maurer said Logan looked like a state title football team as it was big and physical. But Logan was also able to score off transition baskets in the first half to stay in the game. The Grizzlies led 23-13 after one quarter and 38-30 at halftime.

"It would probably one of our better wins at Galena if we would beat them," said Maurer on what he told his team at halftime.

But Galena was plagued by turnovers as Logan outscored the Grizzlies 16-5 in the third quarter. "Things fell apart with turnovers," Maurer said.

Despite facing extremely physical defense, Luke Babbitt was able to score 23 points. Brice Crook added 14 points for Galena.

"I'm real excited about the fact that we got better," Maurer said. "I'm not happy with the loss, but I'm happy that this team is starting to gell a little bit better. I think we played some good competition this weekend."

CARSON JVS WIN TITLE

Caleb Carter was named tournament MVP as the Carson junior varsity boys basketball team defeated host Hug 56-48 in the championship game.

Down at halftime, Carson rallied in the second half for the win. Will Holbert hit several key baskets in the fourth quarter on his way to scoring 15 points, Mitch Brantingham had 13 points, Caleb Carter had 11 points and Markus Adams added five points. David Eller also played well defensively.

Carson advanced to the finals with a 54-37 win over Yerington. Carter hit three three-pointers on his way to scoring 18 points. Paul Cagle scored 10 points, Eller had seven points and Holbert added five points. Drew Good and Adams also played an important role in helping Carson break Yerington's press.
