Reno - Rich "Goose" Gossage, one of baseball's best relief pitchers will be the keynote speaker at the University of Nevada's 22nd Annual Bobby Dolan Baseball Dinner on Wednesday, Feb. 1.
The annual Nevada event will take place in the Grand Exposition Hall of the Silver Legacy Resort Casino. Doors open at 6 p.m. with hosted cocktails. The Silver Legacy Hotel Casino will serve a sit-down dinner at 7 pm. and the program, including a small live auction will follow. The title sponsor of the event is Morrey Distributing.
One of the best relief pitchers in baseball during the late 1970s and early 1980s, the 6-foot, 226-pound Gossage had an intimidating look on the mound because of his size, his fierce scowl, and his cowboy-style mustache.
His 310 saves place him eighth on the all-time save list and his 115 relief victories rank third all-time behind Hoyt Wilhelm and Lindy McDaniel. Goose also became only the third major league pitcher to reach the 1,000-game plateau and became the fourth-oldest player in history to collect a save.
As an added special feature of the evening, the Wolf Pack will welcome and honor 11 former Wolf Pack players who have made it into the Major Leagues. The players who will be introduced and honored at the event include Carson High graduate Darrell Rasner, Shawn Barton, Ryan Church, Andy Dominique, Corky Miller, Lyle Overbay, Eddie Plank, Chris Prieto, Chad Qualls, Rob Richie and Chris Singleton.
Tickets for the Bobby Dolan Baseball Dinner are $175 each, (tables of ten are available for $1,500) $75 for children 12 and under and may be purchased by calling the AAUN at 784-4870, extension 246; a portion of the evening proceeds will be applied to the continued facility enhancements of Peccole Park.
