Anderson, Van Winkle win titles

Brett Anderson and Kameron Van Winkle, representing Minden-Douglas Elks Lodge No. 2670, have advanced the the State Hoop Shoot Tournament.


Anderson and Van Winkle advanced to state by winning district competition on Saturday in Sparks. Anderson and Van Winkle advanced to compete in the state event to be held on Feb. 12 in Hawthorne.


The state event is the third leg of a five-leg national competition in which more than 3 million boys and girls, ages 8-13, compete nationwide.


Five Minden-Douglas Hoop Shoot winners competed in Sparks. Anderson's, a state champion last year, again posted the highest score in the event. Anderson made 22-of-25 free throws to win the 12-13 boys division.


Van Winkle sank 20-of-25 free throws and then 5-of-5 foul shots in a tiebreaker round to win in 10-11 boys. In 8-9 boys, Jaden Wass made 18-of-25 to take second.


Kari Ten Broeck tied for first among 8-9 year-old girls but was unble to win her tie-breaker and settled for second. Jordan Chappell, last year's 8-9 year-old girls state champ, finished third among 10-11 year-old girls.
