Olympic silver medalist Bryan Clay set a world record in winning the decathlon on Friday at the U.S. National Championships in Carson, Calif.
In the process, Clay also qualified for the World Championships to be held later this summer. Clay, the silver medalist last year in Athens, attended Azusa Pacific and has been coached by Azusa Pacific head coach Kevin Reid, a 1983 Carson High graduate.
Clay set a world decathlon discus record. Clay, the heavy favorite in the 10-event competition with the absence of injured Tom Pappas, threw 183 feet, 3 inches to break the world mark of 180-5 set by Razvigor Yankov of Bulgaria in 1979. He finished with 8,506 points for the win.
