The Carson High girls tennis team kept their playoff hopes alive heading into its most important match of the year with a 13-5 win over Damonte Ranch on Tuesday at Centennial Park.
Carson will end the regular season today at Douglas. At stake will be the fourth and final spot from the Sierra League into the Northern 4A playoffs. Also at stake will be five points in the Sierra Nevada Cup presented by Les Schwab.
Carson took a 6-0 lead after the first round against Damonte before Senator coach Diane Baker Roberts began substituting in the second round. "The girls played well," Roberts said. "They were ready to go."
In the first round, Shanni Eng won 6-2, Elizabeth Gohr won 6-2 and Meagan Carter, who was moved from doubles, won 6-0 in singles. In doubles, Lisa Midboe, who was moved from singles, teamed with Desi Casci to win 6-0, Kristi Philippi and Hilary Schlager won 6-2 and Amanda Gohr and Kristen Charles won 6-2.
In the second round, Jena Greenburg won 6-3 in singles. Casci teamed with Beth Lewis in doubles and the two almost overcame a 1-4 deficit before losing 5-7. Freshmen Jamie Good and Karissa Pulizotto also lost in a tiebreaker 6-7 (2-7). Charles teamed with Sarah Asp for a 6-3 win.
In the final round, freshman Breanna Collings won 6-4, Elizabeth Gohr won 6-3 and Carter won 6-3 in singles. Philippi and Schlager won 6-1 and Charles and Amanda Gohr won 6-1 in doubles.
