Carson City resident Gary Nevers, driver of the No. 64 "War Pony" late model stock car, will host a barbecue, car show and fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Carson Colony Gym, 2900 S. Curry St.

"It's kind of a way for everyone to get together, see what each other is doing and talk racing," Nevers said. "This is for the fans. A lot of them don't know what us drivers are doing since Carson City (Champion Speedway) closed."

Nevers has organized the day for fans and for himself. As team driver, he knows what it costs to race nearly every weekend from April to October. Nevers said he is driving for the 2006 championship at Reno-Fernley Raceway and will put in some laps at the new oval track at Rattlesnake Raceway in Fallon.

"I need sponsors," he said. "I've got Capital City Loans with me but need more. Anyone can sponsor me."

Sponsoring commitment is at various levels and investment. Those interested can see Nevers Saturday or call 690-2897.

Nevers' crew includes his brother Branden, Rocky Boice Sr. and Mike Prien, who is also a driver. Nevers has been racing 28 years and holds four championships at the former Champion Speedway.

In the past two years of racing at Reno-Fernley, Nevers has finished in the top-5 in points both years.

"It will be nice to get everyone together so the fans can see what we're doing. I'll try to have schedules for both tracks printed out for them, too."
