Dayton Valley Days coming next month

The 18th annual Dayton Valley Days street fair will be Sept. 16-17 in Old Town Dayton.

The theme will be "Pause and Ponder, From the Schoolhouse to Museum" recognizing Dayton's status of having one of the oldest schools still on its original site in Nevada. "Pause and Ponder" was also the first name of the original Dayton settlement.

The event will include a parade, show 'n' shine car show, a fine-arts show and sale, train rides, games for the kids, entertainment, crafts, antique dealers and vendors of all kinds.

The event is sponsored by the Lyon County Sheriff's Search and Rescue and benefits that group and the Dayton Historical Society.

Fallon

WNCC Fallon holds auditions for 'Fiddler on the Roof'

Western Nevada Community College's Fallon campus will hold auditions for the musical "Fiddler on the Roof" from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday and Aug. 17 at the Churchill County High School Auditorium. The production will take place Nov. 9 - 11 and 16-18.

Those interested in auditioning must attend a pre-audition workshop from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. Tuesday or Wednesday, also at the high school auditorium.

All selected class members who are high school juniors and older must enroll in WNCC's "Musical Theatre Production" class. Cost is $169.50. Call (775) 423-5186.

Derailers to play at free outdoor concert

The mayor, city council and the city of Fallon, along with the Churchill Arts Council, invite everyone to a free outdoor summer concert with The Derailers in Oats Park, Fallon, at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 26.

The Derailers blend Buck Owens' and Dwight Yoakam's Bakersfield sound with the Beatles, Creedence Clearwater, the Doors and Johnny Cash.

Virginia City

2-city Rail Fest set

Virginia City and Carson City will combine for the second annual Rail Fest from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The first day will be in Virginia City at the current V&T depot on F Street, the Comstock History Center on E Street and the Old V&T Freight Depot on E Street.

The event will feature live music, vendors, railroad memorabilia and rides on the historic V&T. Also, a free presentation on the restoration of the V&T will be given by the Nevada Commission for the Restoration of the V&T Railway.

A two-hour Sunset Wine Train will be along the new tracks to American Flat. Wine tastings aboard the train will feature eight wines from Chateau Routon.

A garage sale will be at the Old V&T Freight Depot, and at the Comstock History Center, visitors can see the original V&T steam engine No. 18, the "Dayton,"

In Carson City at the Nevada Railroad Museum, rides on steam engine No. 8 will feature gunfights, music, clowns and a variety of food. Children can be a part of "Operation Lifesaver," a learning program.

Enter Rover into pet parade down C Street

A pet parade will be held at noon Aug. 26 down C Street from the Virginia City Visitors Center to the Bucket of Blood Saloon.

Pets should be registered at the Visitors Center at least one hour before the parade begins. The entry fee is $3 per person, not per pet.

Costumes and creativity are encouraged. Ribbons are awarded for first-, second- and third- place winners and a grand-prize winner, who will be the grand marshal for next year's parade.

There will also be prizes for the "most adorable child/pet combination" and the "most creative entry."

All animal types are welcome, but they must be controlled by leash or reins or be carried by the owner - who is responsible for cleaning up messes.

Yerington

Lyon County Fair and Rodeo starts Thursday

The annual Lyon County Fair and Rodeo is Thursday through Aug. 20 at the County Fairgrounds in Yerington.

This year's event will feature a carnival, rodeo, Moto-X barrel race, hay- squeeze and hay-stealing contests, truck pull, 4H exhibits and contests, mutton- bustin', fine art and photography exhibits, a demolition derby and dancing and family fun.
