Western Nevada Community College welcomes "Remnants," a Rhonda L. Wilson photographic exhibition featuring timeworn leftovers of pioneers who attempted to carve out lives in the tough Great Basin. The exhibit will hang in Virgil Getto Hall at WNCC Fallon from Aug. 28 through Sept. 22.

"The relentless wind, the biting cold, the baking heat, the pervasive dust, the grinding rock, and the fleeting precipitation work hard to erase any trace of human occupation," Wilson said. "But sometimes during this endless process, evocative visions of beauty will reveal themselves, if only for a brief instant."

Wilson's journey took her to mining towns, ghost towns, ranches and homesteads in various states of existence, from the Eastern Sierra of California and Nevada to large parts of Utah, Oregon and Idaho.

"It led me to the lonely back roads of this mountainous and extreme high desert looking for leftover evidence of the hardworking people who tried to tame the land," she said.

The artist's goal is to catch these magical moments on film and make stirring images of the timeworn leftovers.

"Perhaps my images will call forth contemplations of the powers of Mother Nature, who constantly strives to obliterate all traces of labor leaving only temporary remnants at a given moment," she said.

Wilson is a photographer from Reno. She recently showed her work in New York City.

An artist's reception in the gallery will be 4:30-6:30 p.m. Sept. 7.
