A two- to three- acre brush fire early Friday evening at the top of Mount Como south of Dayton led to the speedy halt of a backpacking trip by a troop of Boy Scouts.

According to Capt. Jeff Page of the Lyon County Sheriff's Department, two adults and three juveniles were backpacking in the area and saw the smoke. A helicopter from Naval Air Station Fallon was sent to evacuate the group.

The fire, reported at 3:50 p.m., was contained at 7:45 a.m. after being surrounded by retardant dropped from single-engine aircraft. Crews from Central Lyon County Fire District, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and the Nevada Division of Forestry were sent to the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
