Jazz, '80s rock, '70s ballads find it all this weekend

Lydia Pense, who appears Friday at the "Jazz and Beyond" outing at the Brewery, is one very fascinating singer. Her rich voice is as powerful and full of feeling as ever it was.

She's the best blue-eyed soul singer that has ever bent a note. Her recent CD is her first in decades, and "Transfusion," with Cold Blood, is a stunner.

WANNA MAKE A MOVIE?

Cinemasports will descend on Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort on Sunday in conjunction with the second annual Tahoe-Reno International Film Festival, allowing anyone who has ever thought of making a movie to try their hand at it.

It's a free event for all ages.

Teams meet in the morning for an orientation and receive a list of three mystery themes that must be included in the films. Each team has 10 hours to complete a movie with a surprise list of items. Teams need a digital camcorder, a laptop and the simplest movie editing software. The contest begins at 9 a.m., and movies will need to be completed by 7 p.m.

Each member of the winning team will receive a lift ticket from Northstar. There will be a $10 charge to watch the films. Up to 35 mini-films three to five minutes in length will be shown, beginning at 8 p.m. Call (800) GO-NORTH.

DEF LEPPARD, JOURNEY IN RENO

Those '80s rockers Def Leppard and '70s ballad masters Journey join forces for a massive tour that stops at the Reno Events Center at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 3.

The two Sacramento Capital Public Radio stations will "swap frequencies" effective Sept. 5. NPR news, talk and jazz will be available on 90.9 FM, while classical music will move to 88.9 FM.

"This change is part of our mission and CPR's strategic plan for continued growth of our stations - news and jazz on KXJZ and classical on KXPR," says Station Manager Carl Watanabe.

Listeners will hear no change other than the "change of address" for programming. Some current KXPR listeners in outlying areas will experience degraded reception of KXPR. However, these listeners will benefit from the added service of KXJZ.
