A tribal officer shot on the Walker River Paiute Tribe reservation in Schurz on Wednesday is a 1993 graduate of Carson High School and an August graduate of the police academy at Western Nevada Community College.
Robert Holbrook, 31, was struck in the foot and is recovering at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, according to Mike Powers, co-worker of Holbrook's father Richard who works for Rupert's Auto Body.
"He's doing OK. He had an operation last night," said Powers.
About 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Holbrook, accompanied by Walker River Paiute Tribal Police Chief Joe McMinn, and at least one Drug Enforcement Agency officer were attempting to serve a warrant on a father and son at a home just off Highway 95 North on the reservation.
The father started shooting at the officers who in return fire and the two tribal officers and father and son were injured in the shootout, FBI spokesman David Staretz said Wednesday night.
He added that the father barricaded himself in the home but surrendered after he and his son were injured by gunfire. A dog owned by the residents was shot and killed.
Warrant details weren't immediately known, although Staretz said it may have been drug-related since DEA personnel were at the scene. A neighbor described the house as a known hangout for drug users.
A section of U.S. 95, a busy north-south highway that runs past the reservation and near the two-story house, was shut down for about six hours as FBI agents investigated the site and tried to determine whether anyone else was inside.
Staretz could not be reached for comment on Thursday. The names of the two men in the home were not released.
