Senators girls roll past McQueen

After a stretch of seven games in eight days, the Carson High girls basketball team obviously hasn't had much of a chance to practice.

But now the Senators are going to the other extreme as they won't play another game for two weeks, so they'll have plenty of time to practice. Carson heads into its extended practice time coming off an impressive 56-31 win over McQueen on Tuesday at Morse Burley Gym.

Carson won't play again until the high-powered West Coast Jamboree in Pittsburg, Calif. on Dec. 29-29.

"We need a little practice," Carson coach Ric Garcia said. "We still don't have our offense down pat.

We need to work a lot on the press and the press break for that matter. We're a little rusty. We've played so much, it's hard to fix things."

Garcia, though, was much more pleased with his team's performance than the night before when it struggled to beat Manogue 43-38.

"This was a much smoother game," he said. "I thought the girls as a whole played better."

Carson (6-2) jumped out to a 9-0 lead as it held the Lancers scoreless until there were one minute, 20 seconds left in the first quarter. Danielle Peacon scored six straight points to give the Senators the 9-0 lead.

After McQueen closed to within 10-6, Christa Casci scored six straight points as Carson built a 16-7 lead. After the Lancers closed to within 17-11, Carson gained control for good, beginning when Brandi Vega penetrated and dished to Cassie Vondrak for a layup to make it 19-11.

The Senators ended the half with a 9-2 run. Megan Kilty began the run with a basket to make it 23-13. Gina Bianchi and Peacon worked a high-low post play perfectly with Peacon dishing from the high post to Bianchi for a layup to give Carson a 30-15 halftime lead.

Carson kept pulling away in the fourth quarter with Peacon scoring on a pass from Anna Macquarie to make it 41-24. Blaike King's putback made it 45-27 and Vega showed her quickness when she scored on two breakaway layups to make it 51-30. Casci's two foul shots provided the final margin.

Peacon scored 14 points, Casci and Burroughs each had 10 points and Vega added eight points.

"For us it will be good competition," said Garcia about the West Coast Jamboree. "I think we can compete."

Amy Scott had 13 points and six rebounds and Langley Iverson added 12 points and eight boards for Galena.
