Dayton

Kids' dance lessons start

After more than a year's absence, the Central Lyon County Recreation Division has arranged for dance classes to return to Dayton. DanceSpirit of Carson City will offer four types of dance for boys and girls 7 and older at the Dayton Community Center, 170 Pike St.

Jazz dancing will be taught at 4 p.m., and hip hop will be taught at 5 p.m. Mondays. Beginning ballet class will be at 6 p.m. and intermediate ballet at 7 p.m. Wednesdays.

Classes begin Monday. Costs are $38 per month for one class a week; $65 per month for two; and $90 per month for three. Call 246-6227.

After-school crafts featured at library

After-school crafts will be featured next week at the Dayton Branch Library. The program is geared toward youths in the first through fifth grades.

The program is on second Thursdays rom 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the library, 321 Old Dayton Valley Road. Call 246-6212.

Water workshop set

The Carson Water Subconservancy District will hold a workshop on water resources from 9 a.m. to noon Jan. 22 at the Lyon County Utilities Building, 34 Lakes Blvd., Dayton.

The workshop will focus on the 2006 summary report, planned projects and discuss the creation of a technical advisory committee. Call 887-7450.

Free GED classes

Western Nevada Community College in Fallon is offering free GED (General Education Diploma) classes beginning Tuesday in Dayton. Call 445-4451.

Food bank distribution set

The Dayton Food Bank's distribution will be 4:30 -6:30 p.m. Thursday at the community center, 170 Pike St. The food bank is operated by Healthy Communities of Lyon and Storey Counties and the Lyon County Human Services Dept. Call 246-7550 or 577-6326.

Fallon

Portuguese singing star to perform

The Churchill Arts Council will present a performance of by the international vocal sensation Ana Moura at the Oats Park Art Center in Fallon at 8 p.m Jan. 27. Doors open at 7, and there will be a no-host bar.

Tickets are $17 for CAC members, $20 for nonmembers and are available in Fallon at Jeff's Copy Express, Postage Plus and ITT/NAS Fallon.

CAC also now accepts Visa and Mastercard for ticket purchases at (775) 423-1440.

Silver City

Task force activities this month for all ages

The Silver City Task Force is sponsoring several afternoons of activities during the school break for children.

Sunday, 2-4 p.m.: Slot Car Day. Theo McCormick will set up a free HO scale track at the fire house office, and host a racing day for children 5 and up.

Silver City parents will carpool to NV State Museum and Children's Museum, with the task force sponsoring tickets.

The Case for Change Discussion will be Jan. 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the fire house office. These public discussions are facilitated by Healthy Communities Coalition, Lyon Human Services, and the task force as part of a county-wide community-driven initiative about the future of Lyon. It also encourages a barter/skills sharing system.

The volunteer library resumes normal hours on Sundays, 2 to 4 p.m., when

Starbucks pastries are available. The library has a reference section; children's section including puzzles and crafts; periodicals; and new material every week. The library is temporarily housed in the firehouse office.

Secret Witness of Reno is sponsoring a "road block," in which every Washoe County cable TV station and radio station will feature public service announcements and a program about meth addiction from 7:30-8 p.m. on Tuesday. Residents may see the program on meth and vote on its effectiveness to give constructive feedback to substance-abuse prevention and recovery field workers. A survey and discussion will be at the firehouse office at Tuesday at 7 p.m., with refreshments.

Comstock Cowboys play Sparks casino
