Wolf Pack downs No. 10 Sun Devils to take first win of the season

SURPRISE, Ariz. - The University of Nevada exploded for six runs in the top of the fifth inning and picked up its first win of the season, upsetting No. 10 Arizona State at Surprise Stadium, 12-8.

It was the final game of the Surprise Arizona Tournament and the Wolf Pack is now 1-5.

The Sun Devils fell to 5-4 on the year.

Nevada sent nine players to the plate in the fifth and six scored. Leftfielder Terry Walsh delivered a two- RBI double to tie the game at 5-5.

Catcher Jordan Opdyke doubled in one run and later stole home in the inning.

Shortstop Leo Radkowski belted a two-run homer that scored first baseman Daniel Eastham to conclude the six-run rally.

The Sun Devils seized a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the third, when they sent 10 batters to the plate.

The first six batters collected hits , five of which scored.

Center fielder Colin Curtis hit a two-run double as part of the big inning.

Nevada knocked ASU starter Drew Bowman out of the game in the top of the second inning, scoring three runs on four hits.

Walsh led off the inning with a solo home run over the left center field fence.

Opdyke followed with a walk and Radkowski singled to center.

Both runners advanced on a balk which brought third baseman Ryan Foley to the plate.

Foley got his first collegiate hit and scored both runners to give the Pack a 3-0 lead.

The Sun Devils came right back in the bottom of the fifth, scoring a pair of runs on two hits to make the score 9-7.

Designated hitter Brett Wallace doubled in the first run and came around to score on Rocky Laguna's sacrifice fly to deep right field.

The Pack tacked on a single run in the top of the sixth inning, when Walsh drove in his fourth run of the game, knocking in second baseman David Ciarlo.

Ciarlo drew a walk to reach base.

Radkowski and left handed pitcher Steve Masten were named to the all-tournament team.

Nevada's next action will be the home opener versus intrastate rival UNLV on Friday at 2:00 p.m.

The game will be the first on the new FieldTurf at Peccole Park.
