Mathews will seek fourth Senate term

Reno Democrat Bernice Martin-Mathews announced Tuesday she will seek a fourth term in the Nevada Senate.

Mathews said she wants to serve again "because I can continue to make contributions to enhancing the education and economic climate in our state."

Mathews, who holds a master's degree in nursing from the University of Nevada, Reno, was named to the state Nursing Board by former Gov. Mike O'Callaghan in the 1970s. She worked in health services for 30 years, retiring as director of Nursing and Health Sciences at Truckee Meadows Community College.

She was first elected to public office in 1991, winning a seat on the Reno City Council. She won election to the state Senate representing District 1 in 1994.

"As the co-owner of a small business, I know firsthand how government policies can impact business and ultimately impact jobs," she said. "We need to continue policies that help to diversify our economy, keep taxes low and encourage new economic opportunities."

Mathews is eligible for one more term in the Senate before state limits force her to leave that body.

The 12-year limit for legislators and an eight-year limit for statewide officers were approved by voters in 1996.
