The Bliss Mansion in Carson City was awarded the AAA Four Diamond award for the first time.
Lodging winners must display a high level of service while providing luxurious surroundings. Restaurant winners must feature a fine dining experience with a highly skilled staff and elegant atmosphere.
AAA began conducting field inspections of lodgings and restaurants in 1937. Today, the AAA Diamond Ratings database includes more properties than any other rating system in North America.
The Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort Spa & Casino in Incline Village also won the award. A majority of the winners are in Las Vegas.
The Steak House and the White Orchid in Reno won in the restaurant category.
The Naval ROTC rifle team at Carson High School finished third in the National Secretary of the Navy Rifle meet held in December. Although the team has finished in the top 10 three times in the last 10 years, this was their highest finish.
The team was led by Cody Stokes who fired a 281 out of a possible 300. In addition, he was the top individual shooter in the nation. Other team members were Sarah Stadler, 264, Leah Taboada, 252, and Michael Moltz, 250. The team earned an invitation to Colorado Springs, Colo., to compete in a head-to-head match against the U.S. Navy's top 15 teams. The top four teams from this match will earn an invitation to the JROTC National Championship in Fort Benning, Ga.
In local action, the rifle team is halfway through the season and has a record of 6-0. The team shot a record-breaking score on Jan. 11 defeating McQueen High School with a score of 1,314 out of 1,500 points. The team broke that record the next day against Reno by shooting a record 1,329. The team will continue against Sparks on Tuesday. The regular season will end Feb. 8 in a match against undefeated, and last year's zone champions, Spanish Springs.
The city honored nearly 30 employees with Length of Service awards on Thursday during the Board of Supervisors meeting. Four men and a woman received awards for 25 or more years of service. Those serving longest are: Kenneth Engels, pump operator-driver, 30 years; Bruce Bowen, wastewater plant operator, 25 years; Susan Orsbern, chief deputy, Treasurer's Office, 25 years; Dennis Howard, park facility coordinator, 25 years; and, David Stultz, cemetery sexton, 25 years. Six others were recognized for 20 years, 11 were recognized for 15 years and 7 for 10 years. All received certificates of appreciation, gift certificates from the Carson City Chamber of Commerce, thunderous rounds of applause and, from Mayor Marv Teixeira, a handshake and one of his trademark smart-alecky, yet friendly, personal comments.
