Osheroff rolls at tourney

Ahron Osheroff was named the outstanding wrestler of the event in helping to lead the Carson High wrestling team to the title at the Albany (Calif.) Tournament on Saturday.

Osheroff was one of three wrestlers to win titles for the Senators. Kyle and Todd Banko were also champions for Carson.

The Senators won the tournament with 166 points, finishing ahead of second place Livermore, Calif., which had 132 points. Carson's effort was impressive since it was not at full strength with only 13 wrestlers as the Senators went without a wrestler at 275 pounds.

Carson also went without one of its top wrestlers in Robbie Bozin, who did not wrestle at 135. Bozin was held out as a precaution with a high ankle sprain.

The Senators have one more dual meet left at Reno High on Wednesday before heading to the Northern 4A championships on Feb. 3 and 4. Carson obviously wants to have Bozin ready for zone.

"We'll try to get him back on the mat as soon as possible," Carson coach Casey Schweitzer said. "He definitely plays a key role on our team. It would make winning the zone tournament very tough if we didn't have him."

Osheroff went 4-0 at 171, winning by pin, then winning twice by technical decision, 16-1 and 17-2, before winning by pin in one minute in the finals.

Kyle Banko ran his record to 36-3 on the year by going 5-0 to win the 130 title. Todd Banko went 5-0 to win at 112.

Carson nearly had another champion at 160 in Travis Lamborn, who settled for second after losing 5-3 in overtime in the finals. Lamborn went 3-1.

The Senators also had another wrestler nearly make the finals in Jonas Schenzel, who went 4-1 at 189. Schenzel lost 8-7 in the semifinals, but came back to win by pin in his third place match to take third.

First-year wrestler Zach Taylor had his second straight impressive effort at heavyweight as he went 4-1 to take third, winning by pin in his third place match. Taylor was coming off a third place finish at the Clayton Valley (Calif.) Tournament.

Schweitzer called Taylor's development "very encouraging." "He's an obvious darkhorse," said Schweitzer about zone. "We're definitely looking to get some points out of him."

After losing his first match, Martin Azzam came back to to win his next four matches to finish 4-1 and take fifth. After losing his first match, Aaron Jolcover came back to win his next three matches by pin to take seventh at 140.

Brian Halverson went 3-2 to take sixth at 125 and Owen Craugh went 3-2 to finish seventh at 119. Blake Davidson went 2-2 at 145, but didn't place.

"Overall it was a very good showing," Schweitzer said. " I was real happy with our performance. I thought we wrestled to our ability.

"Overall I thought it was a real good tournament for our guys. We're all happy, comfortable with where we are right now. Our best wrestling is still to come."
