Sometimes the Brewery Arts Center looks beyond the everyday world and comes up with something a bit out of the ordinary. Such is the case with Friday and Saturday's performances of "Improv Kids," starring the city's own BAC Stage Kids.

Improv is the art of going on stage without a script, without any backup material - with just your wits and an active imagination. Sometimes someone suggests a theme or a situation, and the performers take it from there; sometimes an idea is offered to the audience, and the actors embark on a voyage to who knows where.

The fun is the journey, not the final destination. And sometimes the journey may not be as funny as hoped, but you can bet it will be original.

Improv professionals Gerry Orton and Dave Fabrizio, along with Carson High School graduate Nick Josten, have been working with the group in recent days, getting them up to speed by exercises in improv.

"No pauses, no blank spots, keep the ball rolling" has been the motto.

Orton said doing improvisational theater gives kids the skills to be better performers - listening, team work, commitment all play a part. There will be a beginners group and an advanced group. The shows will contain games and musical improvisation.

The show will highlight two "Whose Line Is It Anyway"-style improv shows in which audience participation is encouraged. Beginners and advanced students do all the work.

How good are the Kids? Fork over $5, and see for yourself. But be prepared because the audience is asked to join in the improv - and you won't want to miss your cue.
