Carson City


Local candidates' forum today


Tickets are still available for the Carson City Area Chamber of Commerce candidates' forum today in the Performance Hall of the Brewery Arts Center. Tickets to see the forum are $7 each. People are asked to arrive by 12:15 p.m. Contested local races will be Carson City Board of Supervisors, wards 1 and 3; justice of the peace, district 1; district attorney; and school trustees, districts 3, 4 and 6. State Assembly District 40 candidates also are expected to participate.


The event is co-sponsored by the Northern Nevada Development Authority and Nevada Appeal. The newspaper plans to host its own forum after the Aug. 15 primary election.




Local artists work displayed at eatery


Nine small original oil paintings by local artist Nancy Clarke will be on display at the City Cafe Bakery through June 30.

Learn to weave a basket at museum


Letitia Kendrick, basketmaker, will be teaching participants how to make a double-walled Cherokee basket from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 17 at the Nevada State Museum, 600 N. Carson St. Registration is required by Saturday. Cost is $30, which covers all materials.

Pony Express re-ride comes to Genoa


The annual Pony Express and Snowshoe Thompson Day will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at the Genoa Courthouse Museum in Genoa. The public is invited to see presentations and hear speakers on both the Pony Express and Snowshoe Thompson throughout the day. The 10 day re-ride from Sacramento to St. Joseph, Mo., celebrates the 146th anniversary of the Pony Express. For more information, call 782-4325.

Bodie begins summer hours


Bodie State Historic Park has started its summer hours, daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. These hours will be in effect through mid-September. Admission is $3 per person. Children aged 6-16 are $1, and 5 and under are free. Dogs are permitted, but must be on a 6-foot leash at all times. A self-guided tour booklet is available for $1.50, and visitors can visit the museum. There is no smoking permitted in Bodie, except for in the parking lot. Call (760) 647-6445.
