First responders in the spotlight during Flag Day celebration

The members of the C Hill Flag Foundation wanted a way to show their reverence to civilians who will be called upon to protect the nation in case of attack.

The best way to do it, they figured, was in the shadow of the 65-by-120-foot American flag on the face of C Hill on Flag Day.

"We want to celebrate the flag and Flag Day by honoring the civil servants who serve as the first line of defense in the event of a terrorist attack," Gil Ayarbe, C Hill Flag Foundation member said.

Among the agencies to be honored are the Nevada Highway Patrol, Carson City Sheriff's Department, Carson City Fire Department, the U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Bureau of Land Management.

"People don't realize or remember that if there is a bombing or terrorist attack, all these agencies will come together and work to protect us," Ayarbe said. "Let's honor them for what they do and for how they protect us. It's time that recognition was brought."

The one-hour ceremony will start at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in the parking lot of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1331 McKay Dr. The parking lot is at the base of C Hill.

The event will include short remarks from each of the agencies being honored and from Tim Tetz, executive director of the Nevada Office of Veterans' Services. Afterwards, free hot dogs and cake will be served.

C Hill Flag Foundation President Robin Williamson said that the foundation had hoped to honor first responders on May 14, the one-year anniversary of the completion of the new flag on C Hill. The event was postponed because of scheduling conflicts.
