Carson City

Sierra Club offers hike

The Sierra Club will lead a hike Saturday from Carson City to Hobart and Red House, looking for the route of the 1870s box flume that brought water from Hobart to Virginia City.

The hike is strenuous, about 15 miles with about 2,500 feet of vertical gain. No dogs allowed.

Workshops to be held for Dayton State Park

A series of workshops will be held to discuss future management of the Dayton State Park. The first is 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Dayton Community Center, 170 Pike St. For information, call 684-2787.

Volunteers sought for golf tournament Aug. 5

The Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce will hold its 13th annual golf tournament Aug. 5 and needs players, sponsors and volunteers to help.

Hole watchers, runners, committee members, coordinators, reservationists, check-in persons and bag-stuffers are needed.

A meet-and-greet spaghetti feed with Lyon County Sheriff candidate Charlie Duke will be 11 a.m.-2 p.m. July 8 at the Gold Canyon Steak House, 160 Main St. in Dayton.

Fallon

Arts Council hosts bluegrass concert

The Churchill Arts Council hosts a free outdoor summer concert, "Southern Routes, A Trip Through the Roots Country, Cajun & Old Time Bluegrass of America's Music," with Balfa Toujours and The Dirk Powell Band in Oats Park, Fallon, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

There will also be a "Pub Crawl" from 5 p.m. to midnight at Jack's Place, Frog Daddy's, Armando's Ristorante Italiano, Headquarters Bar & Casino, Fallon Nugget, The Overland, and La Fiesta. Tickets are $5 from each of the businesses.

Cheese Burgers in Paradise will also be available for $3.50 during the concert, or bring a picnic supper.

Proceeds will benefit the Fallon Elite softball team.

'Forever Plaid' musical come to Oats Park

"Forever Plaid," a comedy featuring four singers killed in a crash then revived to live their musical dream, will be performed at the Oats Park Theater in Fallon at 4 p.m. June 25.

After sold-out performances in Carson City, the Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company will reprise the musical.

"Forever Plaid" stars Steve Murdoch, David Tillitt, Steve Meyer and Alan Jones.

Fernley

State treasurer candidate to address Lyon Dems

Dr. Geoffrey Vander Pal, candidate for state treasurer, will address the Lyon County Democratic Central Committee meeting at 6 p.m. Monday at the county Democratic headquarters, 15 E, Main St., Suite 5 in Fernley.

The July meeting will be 7 p.m. July 24 in Dayton. This will be a candidates' night, featuring both state and local hopefuls.

Virginia City

'Cathouse Afternoon' plays in Virginia City

Returning to the Historic Pipers Opera House is " Cathouse Afternoon," by Will Rose.

A bawdy, original musical that takes a trip back to the 1870s, when mischief ran rampant and gold ran the town.

Show dates are 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, today through July 8, with a matinee Saturdays at 2 p.m.

"Ol' Plumbottom," also by Rose, a hip-hop original musical with a mine- safety theme, will be the Saturday matinee at Pipers Opera House from June 24 through July 8. There will be two half-hour shows at 1 and 2 p.m.

Inaugural Comstock jazz festival this weekend

Jazzin' Up the Comstock, a new jazz festival from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, will feature jazz performers in many of Virginia City's historic saloons and one outdoor performance.

Special "Cool Jazz Train Rides on the V&T," with a saxophonist performing, will be Saturday and Sunday aboard the 3, 4 and 5 p.m. trains.

The Mile High Jazz Band will perform in the parking lot at 4 p.m. Saturday. Other jazz acts will be at the Union Brewery, Washoe Club, Delta Saloon, Firehouse Saloon and Sgt. Major's Silver Dollar Saloon.

Other groups scheduled to perform are Grumpy Old Men, Robin Turley, Danny Greco, Eric Ariana, Joe Grissini and Moonlight Express.
