A memorial service for James Melvin Hawkeswood, 80, of Yerington will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Yerington Community United Methodist Church, 221 N. Main St. A reception will follow in the church hall.
Mr. Hawkeswood died March 4, 2006, at the South Lyon Medical Center/Long-Term Care in Yerington. He was born Sept. 22, 1925, in Santa Rosa, Calif., to Joseph and Lillian Peyton Hawkeswood.
He worked for more than 28 years for the Rainbo Baking Co.
He was a major for the Civil Air Patrol, serving as logistics officer for the Nevada Squadron and in the Yerington Air Patrol.
He had volunteered as a fireman and served as fire chief of the Grass Valley (Calif.) Fire Department.
He was a former Grass Valley Elementary School Board president and a member of the Nevada County School Board.
Among his survivors are his wife of 59 years, Betty; sons and daughters-in-law Jim and Diana and Kenneth and Laura; daughter, Janet Sanderson; sister, Delores Alford; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Greenwood Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Grass Valley.

Freitas Rupracht Funeral Home in Yerington is in charge of arrangements.
