Wolf Pack falls to University of Portland in completion of delayed game

The University of Portland won Saturday's snow-delayed game against the Wolf Pack at Peccole Park on Sunday, 7-4.

The game had been postponed Saturday with the Pilots leading 6-3 when snow began falling in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Nevada closed the gap to 6-4 after the resumption of play Sunday with a run in the fifth. Left fielder Trevor O'Sullivan led off with a single to left and moved to second when 2004 Dayton High School graduate Matt Bowman followed with a sharp single to short center field. After a successful double steal, catcher Baker Krukow tapped a weak grounder to the first baseman, allowing O'Sullivan to score.

The Pilots, who improved to 3-11 on the season, got that run back in the top of the sixth. Designated hitter Danny Meier clubbed a two-out triple over the head of right fielder Shawn Scobee and Sean Nicol picked up the RBI with a single up the middle.

The final game of the three-game weekend series between the University of Nevada and the University of Portland was canceled after heavy snow starting falling in the top of the fourth inning Sunday, covering the field quickly. Portland was leading 2-0 at the time of the stoppage.

No makeup date was announced.

"We were lucky to get two games in this weekend in this weather," said Nevada coach Gary Powers, whose team fell to 5-12. "These two teams played hard in some really difficult weather conditions."

In addition, Powers is not happy with the way his team is performing after losing five consecutive games.

"Really, I'm concerned about us, " he said. " We need to execute on offense. Defensively, we're making this game a lot harder than it needs to be."

Notes: Bowman finished the first game 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a stolen base. Bowman started the final game of the series at second base after being restricted to DH for the past couple of weeks with a sore throwing arm.

"He could have played Friday," Powers said. "We held him out because of the weather conditions. He's been chomping at the bit. We'll gradually work him in at the other spots."

Bowman started 29 games in left field for the Wolf Pack last season.
