Carson City

Spring Fling dog show in town

With spring in the air, it's once again time to see some happy pups strut their stuff as the 4 Paws 4-H Dog Club hosts the "Spring Fling K-9 Event," a dog show and competition, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Fuji Park. It's free and promises to provide some entertaining canine antics.

Some of the activities include junior showmanship clinic and competition, adult showmanship competition, obedience show 'n' go and canine good citizenship test

Carson Singers to hold annual concert

The Carson Chamber Singers, directed by Judy Monson, will present its annual spring concert Sunday April 2 at 7 p.m., at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall, 511 W. King St.

This year's concert, "American Spirit," will feature 21st century American sacred music, spirituals, and folk songs performed by the choir, and will include ragtime, fiddle tunes, and blues played by the Silver Strings quartet.

A highlight of the concert is "American Mass" by Ron Kean, with orchestration by John Gerhold. For this, the choir of 35 men and women will be joined by 13 instrumental musicians from the Carson City Symphony.

Tickets are $12 general admission, $10 for seniors, students, and Symphony Association members, and free for children age 16 and under.

Reno Chamber Orchestra plans final concerts

The Reno Chamber Orchestra presents the final two concerts of its 2005-2006 season on Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. at the University of Nevada Reno's Nightingale Concert Hall.

Music director Theodore Kuchar leads a program featuring Gabriel Fauré's "Pavane" and the "Serenade No. 1" by Johannes Brahms.

Violinist Helen Kim, the winner of the RCO's 2006 College Concerto Competition, will also be featured as soloist in Piotr Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto. Call 348-9413 or go to www.RenoChamberOrchestra.org.

Asleep at the Wheel to play in Sparks

Legendary Western Swing band Asleep at the Wheel offers a kick-up-your-heels good time Friday and SAturday in the Celebrity Showroom at John Ascuaga's Nugget in Sparks.

Asleep at the Wheel is an Austin, Texas-based band, winner of nine Grammy Awards. Formed in Paw Paw, West Virginia in 1970, the name is derived from the expression "asleep at the wheel" which means one has fallen asleep while driving a vehicle, or "behind the wheel." It can also describe someone who is blissfully unaware of a dangerous situation.
