Bush premise leads to what conclusion?

A syllogism, in logic, is two premises leading to a conclusion (A + B = C)...or in mathematics, a transitive property of equality (a + b = c, therefore c = a). So, explain to us how sending 700 more troops to Iraq and cutting the school safety budget by 20 percent + raising the deficit by billions more = good for this country. Speak to us, George...the logic and math don't add up...

(Blame the sender on this one ... name omitted to protect the guilty): "An engineer died and ended up in hell. Soon, he became dissatisfied with the level of comfort there and began designing and building improvements and made himself a pretty popular guy. One day, God called to Satan and said, 'How's it going down there?' Satan replied, 'Hey, great ... we've got air conditioning and flush toilets and escalators ... there's no telling what this engineer is going to come up with next.' 'What? You've got an engineer down there? That's a mistake ... send him back up here immediately.' 'No way,' says Satan. 'I like having an engineer on the staff and I'm going to keep him.' 'Send him back,' God thunders, 'or I'll sue.' Satan sneers and laughs, 'Yeah, right. And just where are YOU going to get a lawyer?' ''

Frank Taylor tells us that the Carson Sertoma Club is holding its annual Game Feed, "Men's Night Out," on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the Carson Senior Center to aid children with hearing and speech difficulties. Tickets are $20 at the door, or by calling 882-4441 or 885-7579. Great food and drinks, raffle prizes and the "Bud Girls," are on tap ... (couldn't resist that one) It's a fun time for a good cause...

A Safeway employee, Eric, was helping a lady out to her car the other day, while Maizie was waiting for someone to come out of the store ... while she waited, he not only helped the lady, had a nice conversation with her, hustled (ran) to collect carts, said goodbye to people leaving, and helped another lady to her car ... all the while being cheerful and smiling. What a great example of how all employees should be, particularly when they think no one is watching. Congratulations, Eric ... Safeway is lucky to have you...

Carolyn also wanted to be sure to mention that Judy Lowther is a great judge of age ("someone" thought that "someone" was younger than she REALLY is)...and a great maker of chicken soup (Dick and Maizie could tell you what a great cook she is) ... so, when can she get the recipe?

Mystery solved ... last week Jackie Sandoval wanted to know who "Harvey's Hill" on Goni Road was named after. Helaine Jesse, Molly Sinnott, Jonni Moon, Rory Hogen and Robin Ferguson all let us know it was named for Harvey Brotzman, senior engineer for the Carson City RTC. Seems some people wanted the hill "cut down" for a smoother entrance to the industrial area there, but Harvey opted for the lesser expense and let the hill stay, thus becoming immortalized by having the hill named after him by some wags at the office. Way to go, Harvey...

Lucy Adams tells us about "a woman who walked into her kitchen to find her husband stalking flies with a fly swatter. 'What are you doing?' she asked. 'Hunting flies,' he replied. 'Have you killed any?' 'Yep, three males and two females,' he said. Intrigued, she asked, 'How do you know that?' 'Three were on a beer can ... two were on the phone.' "

Updates ... Brett McCormick (who appeared in several PPI productions) is loving the theater program at Cornish School of Fine Arts in Seattle (we want front row seats when you get to Broadway, B); Brian Whalen, Jr. has a birthday tomorrow ... "and many mooooore;" Carl, a bartender at Mulligan's, treats his customers "just right;" Dan Neverett at WNCC is working twenty hour shifts, seven days a week and is allowed out only once a week to have breakfast at the Villa Basque Deli (that story and a nickel will get you NOTHING, Dan); Debbie Timmons was nice to stop by and say hello, as was Trish Lincoln; and Mary Lou and Jim Martineau are always nice to see. All super people ...

The Brewery Arts Center is presenting the off-Broadway touring show, "A Couple of Blaguards," beginning this Friday at the Performance Hall starting at 7:30 p.m. (883-1976 for details) ... written by Frank and Malachy McCourt, it stars Jarlath Conroy and Howard Platt in what is billed as a "wickedly funny" comedy. Be sure and call the BAC for information and reservations. $22 general, $18 BAC, seniors and students. Also, Mr. Platt will be offering acting lessons during the week ... a good chance to "become a star."

An "Eastern Dude and Dudess," recent newcomers to Carson City, wrote us wondering why so many men here wear hats in restaurants. "Is it because they have a cat in their hat to keep warm ... fear of overhead plumbing ... an unfortunate accident with Crazy Glue ... or is that just how it is here in the West?" Don't know for sure, D&D ... maybe they're just trying to keep their brains or hair from falling out...

Carolyn found this one from "Maxine" ... "A minister decided that a visual demonstration would add emphasis to his Sunday sermon. Four worms were placed into four separate jars, one containing alcohol, one with cigarette smoke, one with chocolate syrup and the fourth in a container of good, clean soil. At the conclusion of the sermon, the minister reported that the first three worms were dead, but the one in soil was alive and well. He then asked, 'What can you learn from this demonstration?' A little old lady in the back raised her hand and said, 'As long as you drink, smoke and eat chocolate, you won't have worms.' Yesssssss..'

'Til next week ....
