The state is looking for professional artists with previous experience in commissioned work for an open competition to paint the portrait of Gov. Kenny C. Guinn, to hang in the Capitol.

Forestry accepting applications for fire assistance grants


The Nevada Division of Forestry is accepting applications for the 2006 Wildland Urban Interface grant program's State Fire Assistance grants. The purpose of this funding is to mitigate risk of Wildland fire in the Wildland Urban Interface areas. Grant projects should identify and assess risk; mitigate those risks and/or educate and inform communities about wildland fire - including defensible space. The maximum dollar amount available per application is $125,000. A minimum 50 percent match is required for each project.

Carson City


National Day of Prayer to be celebrated at Capitol


The Carson City Ministerial Fellowship will host a National Day of Prayer event beginning at noon at the Capitol. Local pastors will read proclamations and prayer for leaders on local, state and national levels, in addition to the men and women in military forces stationed around the world. Music will be provided; the event is free and nondenominational. Activities should be completed by 12:45 p.m. Call 883-5215.




Cinco de Mayo celebrated at United Blood Services


The United Blood Services will be celebrating Cinco de Mayo with Hispanic treats for blood donors, which are needed in the area. Homemade tostadas and burritos will be served, and there will be a drawing for a one-night stay at Harrah's Tahoe, including dinner and a show.

Washoe Tribe Head Start celebrates Cinco de Mayo


The Stewart Center of the Washoe Tribe Head Start will celebrate Cinco de Mayo starting at 5 p.m.. Friday at 465 Clear Creek Ave. The celebration will include American Indian and Latino folkloric dancers. Call 884-1355.




Carson Sertoma Club holds golf tourney


The Carson Sertoma Club will be holding its annual charity golf tournament with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on June 3 at Eagle Valley East Course. Cost is $100 per player and includes cart, barbecue and tee prizes. There will be prizes for the longest drive, a 50-50 closest to the hole and putting and a hole-in-one contest. All proceeds go to local speech- and hearing- impaired children. Hole sponsorship is also available for $100. Lunch is $12 for those not participating in the golf tournament. Lyon County Democrats host Cinco de Mayo celebration
