Carson City


Garden center hosts free seminars


The Greenhouse Garden Center in Carson City will be hosting a series of seminars every Saturday in May. These seminars are free and no reservations are required.


Today, there are two seminars, "How to Design a Bird Habitat" at 10 a.m., and "Container Planter" at 11 a.m. On May 13, stop by for "Let's Talk Fruit Trees" at 9 a.m. and on May 20, "Let's Talk Tomatoes and Peppers" will be at 9 a.m. On May 27 at 10 a.m., stop by for "Growing Organically with Dr. Earth's Help."


Participants are asked to bring a jacket as many seminars are held outside, weather permitting. Call 882-8600.




Carson Tahoe holds wellness fairs


May wellness fair appointments are available in Carson City, Dayton and Minden. Tests include a comprehensive metabolic profile, prostate specific antigen, complete blood count and more. Appointments are necessary. Call 885-4301.




Virginia City


Chili cookoff, parade for Cinco de Mayo


Chili will be served all over Virginia City's main street today at the annual Cinco de Mayo Fiesta Chili Cookoff.


The International Chili Society contest will be in the Bucket of Blood parking lot on C and Union streets and a People's Choice chili contest will be held along the boardwalks of C Street.


The fiesta, sponsored by the International Chili Society and the Nevada Commission on Tourism, will include mariachi musicians today; piñatas for children next to Piper's Opera House today and Sunday.


On Sunday a parade will be held at noon, with the lineup at 11:30 a.m. at the Fourth Ward School.


Late entries are welcome for the parade, which offers cash prizes for float/vehicles, equestrians, marching and musical units.

Lyon County


Democrats hold Cinco de Mayo


The Lyon County Democrats will be holding a Cinco de Mayo Family Fun Day from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. today at In Town Park in Fernley. There will be food, games, music, piñatas, raffles and competitions. The big prize is a four-day cruise to Baja. Call (775) 575-1133.




Horsemen hold clinic today


The Lyon County Horsemen's Association will be holding a ground-work clinic by Tony Sumner, a local trainer from Fallon, at 10 a.m. today, 2325 Ramsey Cutoff in Silver Springs.


Cost is $10 for non-members, and free for members who bring a potluck dish to go with hot dogs and hamburgers for lunch. The $10 fee for non-members includes lunch and a certificate of completion. Call 577-9503.

Moms on the Run aids cancer patients


Moms on the Run will raise funds again for breast cancer patients at 9 a.m. May 14 at Reno High School's Foster Field. Interested participants can register by today to guarantee a T-shirt. Douglas County


Yard sale benefits building of church


A yard sale will be held today and Sunday at 9 a.m. at the Topaz Ranch Estates Garage on Carter Way.


Proceeds go to the building fund of the Topaz Community Open Bible Church. Donations are accepted. Call 226-0020.




Douglas Senior center holds hike


The Douglas County Senior Center is planning its first hike of the season along the Carson River at 8 a.m. today. It will be a three-mile walk with no elevation gain.


Interested seniors must sign up at the center for a place on the transportation bus.


Walkers should wear comfortable shoes and bring lunch and water. Cost is $1 per person. Call 783-6455.
