Mercy ... we read about ultra-conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh being arrested for his use of "prescribed" drugs ... then we get news of liberal Democratic Congressman Robert Kennedy, D-R.I., crashing his car and also having a problem with "prescribed" drugs. Is this a great country, or what? Side-by-side rehab rooms? Equal opportunity for everyone!

The WNCC Wildcats baseball team is on a tear. They just won the Scenic West Athletic Conference regular season championship in their first season, and are ranked 20th in the nation under Coach D.J. Whittemore. The SWAC tournament, here in Carson City at John L. Harvey Field, starts tomorrow afternoon (call 445-3240 for information) and runs through Saturday. If you want excitement ... get up there, take sunscreen, have a hot dog, and yell for the team. "They're greaaaaat ... "

Ken Fraser swears he saw Eloise Koenig, Jonni Moon and DeeAnn Parsons at the game, and sent us this query. "Egad, they smuggled a bottle of hooch in with them, were imbibing freely by mixing Jack Daniels with soft drinks, and enjoying the game immensely, although they didn't have a clue as to what was going on. Soon, they realized the bottle was almost empty and the game had some more innings to go. Based on this information ... what inning was it? And how many players were on base? THINK ... think some more. The answer? It's the bottom of the fifth, and the bags are loaded ... " (We claim diplomatic immunity.)

WNCC also had a great sports dinner last week at the Peppermill in Reno, featuring Carson's own Charley Kerfeld, and benefiting its baseball, soccer and rodeo teams. Good friends, good food, and a good program (and Brian Whalen Sr., of Reno, "won" a lunch with us in the silent auction ... he's so lucky). ... The college will also put on its annual "Multicultural Festival" from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. It features food, entertainment, arts and crafts, gifts and cultural information. So go up and "get cultured." ... And if that's not enough, go to opening night on Saturday at the Community Center for the production of "Grease." (Or, as the Reverend Mother says in "Nunsense" ... "Vaseline"?) Call 445-4942 for details.

We see that the Empire State Building celebrated its 75th "birthday" a few days ago. It was the tallest building in the world at the time, and was built in only 13 months. Hmmmm ... apparently things are slower here in Carson City ...

Speaking of "old things" (well, only two of them) ... happy birthday to the cute Jamie Allred, who turned 9 on Sunday; and to Susie "The Wonder Nurse" Lequerica and Barry Ginter, our editor, who will turn "much older" on Friday (how old, you ask? Older than the sod under our feet, we say ... snicker, snicker).

Mother's Day is Sunday, so forewarned is forearmed. Remember a kind "Happy Mother's Day" to all your mothers, wherever they may be ... especially to "Ma" Tate, from her darling "Care-Bear" ...

Wonderful news from Carson High School ... the culinary team placed in the top 10 in the nation at the national ProStart competition in North Carolina. We are so proud of Penny Reynolds' group, which overcame obstacles and bad ostrich meat to be among the top cooking students in the United States. Moapa Valley High School placed fifth, showing that Nevada has some great "cookers." What a great program ... huge congratulations ...

Lots of stuff going on this week ... BAC Stage Kids' "Aladdin Jr." begins on Friday (883-1976 or 887-0438 for info); the Capital City Arts Initiative hosts a "Get the Word Out" workshop at the Carson City Library tomorrow evening from 6-9 p.m. featuring local gallerists, artists and journalists (267-3295); the Sharkey Begovich "Swing for a Cure" memorial golf tournament is Saturday at the Carson Valley Golf Course. Register by calling 790-1544, and help the Carson Tahoe Cancer Center; and, finally, the Carson City MS (Multiple Sclerosis) Walk will be Saturday also, at Thunder Canyon (329-7180 for details) ... you can help walk for a cure ...

"26 years & still cookin'" is the motto for Jerry Massad's Crackerbox on the corner of Stewart and East William streets. Way to go, Jer ... good food and good people win every time. Tomorrow, if you want to overdose on breakfast or burgers, this is the place to go and help them celebrate 26 years of good eats ... just look at the pictures on the wall, and you'll see it's hereditary. Here's to 26 more ...

DeeAnn Parsons is contributing to our delinquency with this one ... "President Bush got off the helicopter in front of the White House carrying a baby pig under each arm. The Marine guard snaps to attention and says, 'Nice pigs, sir.' The president replies, 'These are not pigs ... these are authentic Texas razorback hogs. I got one for Vice President Cheney and one for Defense Secretary Rumsfeld.' The Marine again snaps to attention, salutes, and says, 'Nice trade, sir.'"

Jackie Maye had her "farewell" Mozart concert at Comma Coffee Saturday evening. She was in fine form, and entertained us with lovely music and conversation. Sadly for us, she will be moving to Florida as soon as she sells her house ... soooo, if you know anyone who needs to buy a "good" house, call her at 882-9571. She would like to be lazing on a Florida beach before fall ...

Mike Hautekeet, of Mike's Pharmacy, is recovering nicely from pacemaker surgery ... which is good news ...

"Thoughts," from Dave Barry (courtesy of Vern Manke): "Never, under any circumstance, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night." "People who want to share their religious views with you, almost never want you to share yours with them." "A person who is nice to you but rude to a waiter is not a nice person." And, "Never lick a steak knife." Amen ... and take your mother to brunch ...
