A homemade bomb exploded beneath a parked car Thursday morning in the Quail Run shopping center on Carson Street.

According to Detective Brian Humphrey, police were called to the 2300 block of South Carson Street at 9 a.m. after a witness heard a bang and saw smoke and debris coming from underneath a Buick SUV parked in the sparsely filled lot.

Humphrey said the "rudimentary device" appeared to be made from a plastic beverage bottle, tin foil and duct tape. He said the bomb was not attached to the vehicle, but was likely placed underneath the SUV after it was parked.

The explosion was not enough to damage the vehicle, he said, but if someone had been holding it they could have been injured.

"I'm extremely shocked," said vehicle owner Jennifer Thomas. She was inside her business, Keva Juice, just before 9 p.m. when someone from Starbucks came and told her of the explosion.

She was unable recall a recent dispute with anyone.

"The only thing I could have done to anyone is make a smoothie wrong," the married mother of two said.

Forensic investigators gathered the melted remains of the drink bottle and some liquid for testing. Humphrey said he hopes the materials will garner some leads.

"If anyone maybe saw someone driving out of the area quickly, or noticed someone bending down in the parking, I'd like to talk to them," he said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Carson City Sheriff's Department at 887-2020 ext. 1400.
