Bowman is Newcomer of Year

Carson High graduate Cassie Bowman was named as the Newcomer of the Year in the Midwest Classic Conference for the NAIA school William Penn of Iowa in women's soccer.

Bowman, a freshman, was also named to the all-conference second team. Bowman leads the conference with 15 goals, including seven in conference play. The two-time MCC Player of the Week has posted six multiple-goal performances, highlighted by a hat trick against Iowa Wesleyan in the MCC Tournament's first round. Her 15 goals ranks sixth on William Penn's all-time single season list and her 31 points (15 goals, one assist) ranks seventh

William Penn (6-13-1), the MCC Tournament champions, is seeded No. 2 in the NAIA Region VII Tournament and will face the winner between No. 3 Robert Morris and No. 6 Trinity Christian on Friday in Chicago.

Stalling leads Southwestern

Despite playing with a possible broken bone in her left shin, Carson High graduate Sarah Stalling led the Southwestern Community College women's soccer team of Coos Bay, Ore., into first place in the Souther Division of the Northwest Athletic Association, which covers Oregon and Washington.

Southwestern recently tied Lane Community College 2-2 and beat Clackamas 3-1 to move into first. Stalling played only 10 minutes against Lane as she had to come out with a severe injury to her shin. She was told she had eith a bone contusion or a broken shin.

Despite the injury, Stalling was able to score for Southwestern in the first two minutes against Clackamas, which entered the game in first in the division. Five minutes later she assisted in another goal that was scored. In the second half, Stalling was alone in the box with the goalie, and scored on a beautiful tap over the goalie's hands while she was about three feet in the air.

Southwestern has clinched a spot in the Northwest Athletic Association playoffs and will try to earn homefield advantage in the playoffs when it plays at Clark College on Saturday.
