A graveside service for Michael E. "Animal" Reiter, 59, a 25-year resident of Silver Springs, will be 1 p.m. Dec. 1 at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley.
Mr. Reiter died Nov. 8, 2006, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Reno. He was born Nov. 23, 1946, in Bozeman, Mont., to Lawrence and Patricia Reiter.
Before moving to Silver Springs, Mr. Reiter lived in Boise, Idaho.
He was a high school graduate and served in the U.S. Navy from 1963-73 as a radioman second class, then in special services. He was awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for his service in the Dominican Republic and the National Defense Service Medal before being honorably discharged with a service-related disability July 31, 1973.
He was the drill sergeant for the "Dingbat Squad."
Mr. Reiter was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Rosemary Alice.
Among his survivors are his niece Blaze Hueth, whom he had raised for the past 13 years; daughter Deborah Lynn Droddy and son Michael E. Reiter Jr., both of San Diego; brothers James L. and Patrick Reiter, both of East Yellowstone, Mont., and Johnny Reiter of Arizona; niece Arielle Hightower of Silver Springs and three grandchildren.
A potluck wake will follow the memorial services at the Bait Farm, Highway 50 East in Silver Springs. Guests are invited to bring their stories and a dish.
Final Wishes mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
