Three local runners qualify for nationals

Carson City's Gloria Sosa, Peter Brinson and Erika Sosa all advanced to the USA Track and Field Junior Olympic National Championships at Sunday's regional event held at Woodward Park in Fresno, Calif.

The three advanced to the national event to be held Dec. 9 in Spokane, Wash. There were 350 runners who competed in 10 age divisions in the regional meet. The top 20 runners in each division advanced to the nationals.

Gloria Sosa took eighth in the intermediate race, finishing the 5K event in 20 minutes, 8 seconds. Brinson was 13th in the most competitive divisions as he had an outstanding race to finish the 3K event in 11:48.

In the regional qualifer at Woodward Park, Erika Sosa took 21st. She moved up to 15th in the regional meet, finishing the 3K course in 12:10.

Approximately 300 runners from all over the country will compete in each race at nationals. The top 25 in each race will achieve All-American status.
