East Winnie Lane shopping center fills up

Diverse businesses are filling out the Crossroads shopping center in North Carson City, including an oriental market, a tortilla to-go shop and a $5 pizza franchise.

Carson City's only independent puppy store will open at the East Winnie Lane shopping center by Nov. 1.

Lil Pups will sell a Yorkie for $850, a Maltese for about $800 and a Chihuahua for $500, said owner Danny Franks.

"The most popular right now is the English and French Bull Dogs," Franks said. "They'll go for $1,200 and up. I can sell all I can get for $1,250. They (buyers) will be standing at the door waiting for them."

Puppies will come with their papers, shot records and a health check.

"We like to sell right away at a medium price where people can get a good buy," he said. "And they have 10 days to take them to a vet. If anything is wrong, they get a 100 percent refund."

He owned a pet store in Roseville, but said he sold it because of the high cost of doing business in California.

Utah-based franchise $5 Pizza will open in the last week of October, said owner Tony Coltrin. The 1996 Carson High grad also owns the Wienerschnitzel restaurant.

His first week in business will be capped with a massive giveaway of medium pizzas on Nevada Day, from 5-7 p.m.

"I'd like to give away a couple hundred pizzas," Coltrin said.

Tortilleria Cuauhtemoc, owned by Emma Rojas Aguilar, will sell fresh corn and flour tortillas daily. She and her husband, Margarito Aguilar, will make up to 110 pounds of tortillas a day.

"People enjoy (the tortillas) because it takes a lot of time," she said. "You can give the people exactly what they need. We can cut smaller or larger tortillas."

Bangkok Tokyo Market will carry oriental, Latin American, Middle Eastern, and African foods, said owner Boon Prachunbar. He also operates Thai Chili restaurant in Reno. Prachunbar owned an international supermarket in Reno for 20 years until selling it in June.

"When I owned that place, a lot of people came up from Carson City and wanted me to open one there, so I thought it was the right market," he said.

About three vacancies are left in the five-acre shopping center, said Robyn Uhart, an associate with John Uhart Commercial Real Estate, the listing agency. East Winnie Lane LLC purchased the shopping center this year for $5.8 million from McKenzie Properties, according to assessor records. The LLC is operated by Jared and Joanne Chao, of Thousand Oaks, Calif., according to secretary of state documents.
