Lewis and Cobler advance to semifinals

Bryt Lewis and Brad Cobler are one win away from punching their ticket to the NIAA 4A State Championships.

Lewis and Cobler led an outstanding day for Carson High in the Northern 4A singles and doubles championships on Friday at Reno's Plumas Center. Lewis and Cobler advanced to today's doubles semifinals where they will play Galena's Gavin Deller and Matt Archer.

With a win, Lewis and Cobler would advance to today's finals. But even with a loss, Lewis and Cobler would still have a chance to advance to state in today's third place match against the loser between two Reno High teams.

The top three doubles and singles advance to state. "They have a good shot at trying to go to state," Carson coach Pat Houlihan said.

One of those Reno teams was almost the victims of a stunning upset at the hands of Carson's James Pelz and Jordan Rogers. Pelz and Rogers won 6-3, 6-2 before falling to the Reno team 6-1, 5-7, 3-6.

"It was very, very close," Houlihan said. "It could have gone either way. They played their hearts out."

Also for Carson, Nick Smallman and Chris Wear advanced to the to the quarterfinals, winning 6-2, 6-3 and 7-5, 6-33 before losing to Archer and Deller 1-6, 3-6. Lewis and Cobler won 6-0, 6-0, 6-2, 6-3 and 6-1, 2-6, 6-2.

In singles, Spencer Brinson made it to the quaterfinals. He won 7-5, 7-5 before losing to unbeaten Jeffrey Mullin of Reno 0-6, 1-6. Jeff Van Epps lost to Galena's Collin Davis 0-6, 0-6. Davis joined teammate Chris Schwartz and Mullin in the semifinals.

"The kids were very representative of Carson High School," Houlihan said. "They played their hearts out. It was fun to watch. I've had a real fun year with these kids."

For Carson High, Christa Casci won 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinals. Lisa Midboe lost to Galena's Sierra Leeder 0-6, 1-6. Leeder beat Casci 6-0, 6-0 to advance to the semifinals.

Michelle Mauer and Sarah Asp lost 1-6, 3-6 to the High Desert League's No. 1 seed from Fallon. "They actually played well," Carson coach Diane Baker Roberts said.

Kristin Charles and Emily Wong lost their first round match. "We did all right," Roberts said. "It was a fun way to end it all."
