Gas prices in Carson City dropped 13 cents a gallon to $2.92 this month, the largest decrease recorded in the state, according to a AAA Nevada report released Tuesday.

Even though the average price of gas in the state decreased by 11 cents to $2.96 in the last month, Nevada is still topping the nation for gas prices.

Nevada is tied with California for the third highest average among other states. Only Hawaii and Idaho are higher. In the August 15 AAA survey, Nevada ranked 11th in the country for the highest average gas price.

"After the Labor Day holiday weekend, gas prices traditionally start to drop," said Michael Geeser, spokesperson for AAA Nevada, in a press release. "So far this year's hurricane season has had no effect on refinery operation on the gulf coast. That has created a small cushion between supply and demand and allowed prices to fall."

Reno is at $3, a 12-cent decrease from last month and a 14-cent decrease from last year. The average price in Las Vegas for a gallon of regular gas is $2.88, a 12-cent decrease from the last AAA survey. That's 7 cents less than this time last year when the effects of Hurricane Katrina were still being felt.

The national average for a gallon of regular unleaded has dropped to $2.61, down 39 cents from last month's survey. The most expensive gas in the United States is in Wailuku, Hawaii, where it costs an average of $3.61.

The least expensive gasoline in the country is found in Springfield, Miss., where it costs an average of $2.22.
