Future City Competition deadline Oct. 15

The school registration deadline for this year's National Engineers Week Future City Competition is Oct. 15. The contest will take place in January.

First-place winners will win an all-expense-paid trip to the Future City National Finals in Washington, D.C., on Feb. 19-21. For information, visit www.futurecity.org.

Registration for fall Kindermusik begins this month

Fall registration for Kindermusik, a program designed to help children aged newborn to 7 years old develop better coordination and language skills, begins this month. There are four separate classes.

• Kindermusik Village, for children aged newborn to 11Ú2 years old, will run from 10-10:30 a.m. Mondays in Carson City and Wednesdays in Gardnerville. Cost is $125 for 15 weeks, with a materials fee of $65. Parents must attend.

Kindermusik Our Time, for children aged 11Ú2 years to 3 and older, runs from 9:15-9:45 a.m. on Mondays in Carson City and Wednesdays in Gardnerville, and from 10-10:30 a.m. Saturdays in Gardnerville. Cost is $125 for 15 weeks with a $65 materials fee. Parents must attend.

• Kindermusik Imagine That!, for children aged 3-4 years old, runs from 2-2:45 p.m. Mondays and 10:45-11:30 a.m. Saturdays in Carson City and from 2:30-3:15 p.m. Wednesdays in Gardnerville. Cost is $135 for 15 weeks with a materials fee of $70. Parents and siblings join in the last 15 minutes for sharing.

• Kindermusik for the Young Child, for children aged 5-7, will run from 3:15-3:45 p.m. for semester one students and from 4:15-5:15 p.m. for semester three students Mondays in Carson City, and from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Wednesdays for semester three students in Gardnerville. Cost is $155 for 15 weeks with a materials fee of $80.

Carson City

Brewery to offer class in singing

A beginners singing course is being offered by the Brewery Arts Center.

The class is for anyone 12 years to adult who would like to learn to sing or improve their singing.

No previous musical experience necessary.

The class is being taught by voice teacher and vocal coach Marshall Brodeur, who has more than 25 years of experience as a professional vocalist.

The 10-week class runs 7-8 p.m. Wednesdays. Class fee is $120. To register, call 883-1976.

Volunteers, vendors needed for Carson City Library's Oktoberfest

The Carson City Library Foundation needs volunteers to help work shifts at its annual Oktoberfest fundraiser, which takes place 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Oct. 7.

Artisans and crafters are also wanted to sell wares. Volunteers should call 885-9807, and vendors 882-2993.

'Art & Archaeology' and 'Recent Work' on display at WNCC

"Art & Archaeology of Ancient Peru," an exhibition of photos by Dr. Hal Starratt, and "Recent Work," a collection of oil paintings by Naomi Nickerson, are currently on display at Western Nevada Community College.

"Art & Archaeology of Ancient Peru" showcases Peru's fascinating past, from the mud-brick huacas of the coastal Moche to the grand stone cities of the highland Inca.

Dr. Starratt, a WNCC anthropology instructor, participated in a five-week study tour of Peru and Bolivia, filled two notebooks with observations, and shot more than 400 digital photos in the Sacred Valley, Lima, Machu Picchu, Cuzco, and Lake Titicaca.

The exhibition will be on display in the Main Gallery through Friday.

"Recent Work" will hang in the College Gallery through Oct. 6. This collection of framed oil paintings features horses galloping across rolling landscapes and more.

Douglas County

4-H to hold expo in at fairgrounds

The annual Nevada State 4-H Exposition will be held Oct. 13-15 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.

Youth from around the state will exhibit projects and participate in the Horse, Dog, Rabbit and Cavy shows, a Fashion Revue and several other events.

The evening of Oct. 13 will feature a barbecue and awards presentation.
