STAGECOACH - Eight people were taken to the hospital, including a Lyon County sheriff's sergeant, his wife and four children, following a Thursday afternoon accident on Highway 50 East at Apache Drive.

Sgt. Bryan Veil; his wife, Leila; and children Devan, Magen, James and Gabriele were westbound in a Ford minivan when a Chevy Tracker pulled out from Apache Drive about 3:45 p.m.

Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Todd Hartline said the driver of the Tracker, a 17-year-old Silver Springs girl, was attempting to turn left onto the highway from Apache when she "pulled out directly into the path of the van."

Hartline said the front of the van struck the left side of the Tracker, and both vehicles ended up blocking the left eastbound lane.

At least three people from Veil's vehicle were flown by helicopter to Washoe Medical Center in Reno. A passenger in the Tracker, Allison Maher, 17, was taken to Washoe Medical Center by ambulance along with three others from the van.

Tracker passenger Chris Vantessel, 16, declined medical treatment, though he complained of head pain, said Hartline.

Veil is the younger brother of Lyon County sheriff's candidate Allen Veil.

Leila Veil works in the control room of the Lyon County Jail.

Hartline said he didn't believe any of the injuries were life-threatening.

The driver of the Tracker will be cited for failure to yield from a stop sign.
