Carson golf wins again

A short-handed Carson High golf team managed to win its third straight Sierra League Tournament on Tuesday, winning at Washoe Golf Course.

The Senators scored a 428 to edge second place Reno High, which finished with a 436. South Tahoe was third at 445.

Carson was able to win thanks in huge part to Jordan Rogers, who fired a 79 to finish second in the individual standings. Rogers finished one stroke behind low score medalist Bobby McCracken of Wooster, who shot a 78. McCracken and Rogers were the only two golfers to break 80.

The Senators also received solid efforts from Zack Rispin (82), Spencer Brinson (83) and Sam Staub (89), who was competing in his first tournament. Rispin tied for third and Brinson took fifth.

Carson was without two of its top golfers in Kevin Goles and Isaac Holt, who had previous commitments. Also for Carson, Steven Hein fired a 95 and Ryan Livermore had a 96.

"Small, small greens," said Carson assistant coach Wade Greenlee about the course. "They were hard, they were fast. If you didn't keep it in front or have a good chipping game it was just tough."

Greenlee said it was a struggle for Hein and Livermore on a course that didn't suit their game. But he also said the course suited Rogers' game.

"He has the game for this," said Greenlee about Rogers.

"He it it straight and he chipped and putted well. He just played smart."

Greenlee also said with a little better short game, Staub could have shot in the low 80s.

"We're pretty happy to get a win,"Greenlee said.

The next Sierra League event will be on Monday at Reno's Wild Creek.
