The Historical Society of Dayton Valley and the Friends of the Dayton Valley Library are getting together on the 2007 historical lecture series, tour and celebrating historic transportation.
The lectures start May 3 at the Dayton Senior Center at 320 Old Dayton Valley Road with a lecture by Phillip Earl on the Emigrant Trail. Earl is a retired curator of history at the Nevada Historical Society and a popular author, lecturer, teacher and consultant.
On May 10 at 7 p.m. Larry McPherson, past president of the National Pony Express Association, Nevada Division, and a Lyon County commissioner, is expected to speak on the Express.
At the Oodles of Noodles festival May 12, ground will be broken to install kiosks at the Carson & Colorado Railroad station, which was recently acquired by Lyon County.
On May 31 at 7 p.m. in the Dayton Senior Center, Earl will do a lecture on the Lincoln Highway, of which River and Pike streets were a part.
May 19, tourists can meet at the Dayton Museum on the corner of Shady Lane and Logan STreet for a walking tour of Old Town. Stony Tennant, a longtime resident and an avid historical buff will share his knowledge and perhaps a tall tale or two.
On May 31 at 7 p.m. at the Dayton Senior Center, Bernie Allen will speak about the Carson & Colorado Railroad. Allen is an avid reader of history, a volunteer at the Nevada State Railroad Museum and the retired postmaster of Coleville, Calif.
