Galena baseball sweeps Fallon

Jacob Anderson outdueled Lyle Gardner in the first game of a prep baseball doubleheader Saturday to lead Galena to a sweep against the Greenwave at the Ed Arciniega Athletic Complex.

Galena won the first game, 4-1, but came back in the matinee to pound Fallon, 14-3. Galena is 9-0 in the High Desert League, and Fallon is 3-6, 11-9 overall.

Galena coach Gary McNamara praised Gardner and the Wave for their first-game performance.

"Lyle Gardner did an outstanding job on the mound," McNamara said.

He also said Gardner and the Wave gave Galena its toughest game of the season.

Gardner, who allowed two earned runs on three hits, pitched five innings. Dan Bright wrapped up the final two innings, pitching scoreless ball and allowing the Grizzlies one hit.

"I pitched a pretty good game," Gardner said. "My fastball and changeup worked well."

Fallon coach Brad Barton said Gardner and Anderson both pitched well.

Barton said he was pleased to see his players get on base and create opportunities to score.

Anderson pitched the entire game, allowing four hits and striking out seven.

Galena scored first against Fallon when Peter Lazzari singled in a run in the third inning. The Grizzlies scored three more runs in the fifth inning. Gardner walked Scott Underwood to begin the inning and then hit Ryan Howsley. J.D. Peters reached base on an infielder's error.

A catcher's interference and RBIs from Tony Thompson and Eric Maupin accounted for the final two runs.

Trevor de Braga batted in Fallon's lone run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a single.

Galena began the second game slowly against Fallon starter Brett Wickizer, but the Grizzlies then broke the game open with four runs in the second inning.

Based on Galena's first-game performance to early in the second game, McNamara said the Grizzlies did not hit to their capability.

"We needed to find a different way to win. We used 'small ball' to create runs," he added.

McNamara said his team's bunting helped with putting Galena back on track.

"I'm happy to get two wins today," McNamara said.

Lazzari and Howsley each knocked in a run in the second inning. The Grizzlies scored a run in the third on Jake Hess' inside-the park home run. Tony Thompson had a two-run homer in the fifth inning. Galena scored four runs in the sixth.

The Wave scored a run off Galena starting pitcher Matt Evans in the second inning on Nate Stenberg's sacrifice fly. Allan Albisu drove in a run in the third and then fifth innings.
