DAYTON - Terry Benson has brought his childhood pursuit and natural artistic ability to Curves for Women here.

Now gracing the east wall of the building is an airbrushed recounting of the area's history, complete with the V&T Railroad and Tunnel 3.

"This mural brings different points in my life full circle," Benson said.

He has drawn since he was a kid" and has returned to this pursuit at different points in his life. This particular work ties together two chapters of his adult life.

Benson had worked in the past as a mine safety inspector and as an employee for Art Wilson Construction where he worked on the restoration of Tunnel 3.

"Mining history has become a passion for me, much like my art," Benson said. "So when I had the opportunity to do the mural, it just came together."

Benson and his wife, Catherine, had gone through trying times with their son, Zachary, 16 months, who underwent three brain surgeries this past year.

"The community really came together and supported us," Benson said. "This is a way for me to give something back, service work. But if anyone wants (paying) work done, I'm willing."

It is his dream to incorporate this love of art into either a full-time or sideline business.

"I do believe I have a very versatile gift and can work in all mediums, though my favorite is pen and ink on handkerchief," he said. "My wife has been really supportive and believes I can do this, too.

"I get to be doing this (present mural) thanks to my wife and her support."

The mural is also a tribute to Terry's late father, who he said, would be glad to know his son is doing well in his life.

"This would make him happy and he knows," Benson said.
