The University of Nevada, Reno and Nevada's fire agencies have created a Web site to provide comprehensive, up-to-date information and recommendations on defensible space to homeowners.


Homeowners can also receive a free "Living with Fire" publication by calling their Cooperative Extension office or local fire agency.

Arbor Day tree planting ceremony


There will be a tree planting ceremony hosted by the Nevada Division of Forestry and the Carson City Shade Tree Council at noon Friday at the Nevada Firefighter's Memorial in Mills Park. This ceremony is free and open to the public. There will be refreshments afterward. Call 684-2500.




New dance club forming


The High Sierra Swing Dance Club will be holding its first monthly dance at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Brewery Arts Center. There will be a dance workshop at 6:30. Dance admission is $7 for members and $10 for nonmembers. Workshop admission is $7. Call 250-3743.




Free meet and greet at D'Vine Wine


There will be a meet and greet with Pierre Chevalier, the cousin of Tracy Chevalier, author of "Girl with a Pearl Earring," at 6 p.m. today in D'Vine Wine's private room. There will be a free raffle for the novel, showings of scenes from the movie, and sampling of Pierre Chevalier's wines.


Benefit rummage sale


Natives and Newcomers will be holding its annual rummage sale from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at the corner of Saliman Road and Highway 50 East. All money collected goes to local charities. Call 885-9019.

UNR alumni to host Beerfest


The University of Nevada, Reno Young Alumni Chapter is hosting its 13th annual BeerFest from 6:30-10 p.m. Friday at the Eldorado Hotel and Casino. Proceeds for this event raise money for undergraduate scholarships at the University of Nevada, Reno.


Tickets on the Web for $25 or at the door for $30. Event price includes free sampling of beers, appetizers and live entertainment provided by EJ Presents. Patrons must be 21 or older with valid photo identification to attend. Advance ticket purchase is available at www.yacbeerfest.com.




Arbor Day tree walk at the May Arboretum


There will be a free lunchtime walk at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Wilbur D. May Arboretum in honor of Arbor Day. Call 785-4153.
