Donald Norman VanNostrand, 68, a 17-year Carson City resident, died April 26, 2007.

Mr. VanNostrand was born in 1938 in Los Angeles, to Barbara Shiells Hall and Harold Franklin VanNostrand Sr.

He was a retired California Highway Patrol officer, having served in Los Angeles, Ventura, Fresno and Madera, all in California. Prior to joining the CHP, Mr. VanNostrand was a firefighter for Ventura County, Calif., and a police officer for Port Hueneme, Calif.

He worked for the Reno Hilton as security for 15 years prior to his retirement in 2003.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by sisters Hazel Day and Georgene VanNostrand.

Among his survivors are his wife, Anne Marie VanNostrand; son and daughter-in-law, Andrejs and Kymberly VanNostrand of Reno; daughter and son-in-law Donna and Dave Redfern of Carson City; daughter Susan Lynn Gray of Concord, N.C.; stepdaughter, Shelley Robison of Camarillo, Calif.; brother, Harold Franklin VanNostrand Jr. of Laguna Niguel, Calif.; sisters Barbara Lee Cooley of Riverside Calif., and Annabelle Brosio of Olympia, Wash.; and eight grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the WNCC Foundation Donald VanNostrand Fund at Western Nevada Community College, 2201 W. College Pkwy., Carson City, NV, to benefit criminal justice majors, or to a charity of choice.

Autumn Funerals and Cremations is in charge of arrangements.
