The lead-footed driving days of summer will be over in a number of Carson City neighborhoods when most schools start back up on Monday.

Carson City Sheriff's Chief Deputy Steve Schuette said extra patrols will be on hand during the mornings and afternoons in the school zones surrounding the city's 10 schools.

"There will be an increase in enforcement in those zones," he said.

Penalties for speeding in a school zone are a fine of $142 for speeds 1 to 15 mph over the limit and $187 for speeds 16 mph or more over the speed limit.

In certain zones, such as Fremont Elementary between Little Lane and Cardinal Way, the 15 mph speed limit is only enforced when the amber lights of the signs are flashing. Yet, in the school zones surrounding Carson Middle School and Bordewich Bray, some signs read "15 mph between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m." Other signs read "15 mph 7:30 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. and 2:15 to 3:30 p.m."

Sheriff Ken Furlong said drivers should become familiar with the school zone they frequent.

"Saliman has a lot of kids that cross the street back and forth. If you don't want to be delayed by the reduced zones or kids crossing the streets, select alternative routes," he said. "While we are talking about school zones, buses are dropping kids off all over town and you may have to reduce your speeds then also."

Furlong also said parents should talk to their children about riding their bicycles to school.

"They should give them specific safety instructions to walk those bicycles across the streets and to not assume that drivers see them," he said.
