A Reno man surrendered to authorities Wednesday in an alleged drunken-driving accident that left a Fernley woman critically injured.

John Thomas Berryman, 40, is being held at the Washoe County Jail on $20,000 bail on a charge of DUI causing substantial bodily harm in the Nov. 1 accident on Interstate 80, 23 miles east of Sparks.

According to investigators, Berryman was traveling west in the eastbound lanes of the divided highway about 10:30 p.m. when his 2005 Chevy Avalanche crashed head on with a car driven by Lisa Lynn Fuimaono, 28.

Fuimaono remains in intensive care at Renown Regional Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, a Nevada Highway Patrol trooper said.

Mr. Berryman received moderate injuries.

"Troopers suspected that alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash and awaited the results of the toxicology report of Mr. Berryman before taking any enforcement action," said Trooper Chuck Allen in a news release. "Based upon those results, which were well in excess of the .08 percent legal threshold, a felony warrant was issued."
