An 88-year-old Fallon man struck in a crosswalk in front of the Carson City Nugget on Thursday night is recovering in a Reno hospital, his sister said Wednesday.
Charles Cano underwent surgery for injuries sustained to his leg and shoulder during the 6:45 p.m. accident at the crosswalk at Carson and Spear streets.
According to Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Scott Morron, Cano was crossing west to east in the crosswalk in front of Cactus Jack's Casino, when Harry Albert Peterson, 84, struck Cano in the northbound slow lane.
"Mr. Peterson said he never even saw the guy," Morron said.
Cano was taken by ambulance to the Carson City Airport. From there, he was flown to Renown Regional Medical Center.
"He said he didn't think about anything until he could hear the helicopter," said his 77-year-old sister, Marcella Schiavo, from her home in Milpitas, Calif.
She said Cano, retired from Hewlett-Packard, was given his first physical therapy session on Wednesday and is expected to be released from the hospital in a few days. He will likely spend a week to 10 days in a convalescent center after his release from Renown, she said.
"He goes to Carson every weekend because he loves to play the slot machines and bingo," Schiavo said.
Peterson was cited for failing to yield the right of way.
