Low-income families may qualify for home repairs

The Rural Nevada Development Corporation has $500,000 in funds available in Carson City for homeowner rehabilitation.

Planning Commission eyes several issues

The Carson City Planning Commission meets at 3:30 p.m. today in the Sierra Room of the Community Center, 851 E. William St.

Members of the commission will consider a tentative planned-unit development, Ross Park, that would allow 23 single-family detached units on 1.24 acres in the 4700 block of Snyder Avenue. A variance is sought for reduced project site size; PUDs are usually on 5 acres minimum. Other exceptions would include a less-than-normal a 20-foot periphery setback and a reduction in the standard lot size for multifamily apartments from 6,000 to 750 square feet.

Also on the agenda is a possible change in the city's trails and pathways plan to redesignate an official bicycle path from Arrowhead Drive to a route along the edge of the airport.

Renewed discussions about allowing a small, indoor pitching facility to be built in the northeast corner of Governors Field, and if Goodwill Industries should operate a secondhand shop in a portion of the city's general commercial zone on the north side are also scheduled.

Scrapbooking and album-making class Thursday

There will be a class on album making and scrapbooking 10 a.m. Thursday at the Carson City Senior Citizens Center's Jobs Peak Room. Participants should bring photos to make a sampler.

Bartley Ranch now has birding backpacks

Bartley Ranch Regional Park now has birding backpacks available for check-out, a service provided free of charge by the Washoe County Department of Regional Parks and Open Space.

Packs may be checked out with a valid ID from 8 a.m. and must be returned before the park closes. Hours vary with the season. Each pack contains an Audubon bird call, the park's bird check list and trail maps, two identification cards, the Birdsong Identiflyer, a Nevada Birding Map from several local area agencies, several books and a Acorn Naturalist Field Binoculars. Kerak Shrine Circus at livestock center
