The Carson Cardinals were still suffering some aftereffects from their 10-day trip to Australia, but nonetheless managed to give Manogue a go in a 14-13 loss in the Joe DiMaggio State Tournament Thursday at Wooster High School.

The Cardinals were one run away from losing via the 10-run mercy rule, but slugged back for an eight-run sixth inning.

Carson had a runner on third with Rob Valerius up, and even though he put the ball in play, Manogue ended the the threat and took the win.

"I can't get on the kids. They played pretty well today. They were there at 9:30 (a.m.) for an 11 o'clock game.

"The kids were a little tired. They had a 14-hour plane ride (Tuesday). We're usually loud in the dugout. We probably said two words. They'd score, sit down on the bench and yawned. Chugged a Red Bull."

Manogue outhit the Cardinals, 14-12.

David Charles, Kyle Stone and Tyler Smith shared time on the mound for Carson.

Charles went 21Ú3 innings, giving up five runs; Stone lasted 22Ú3, allowing seven runs; and Smith gave up two runs in two innings for the Cardinals, who finished 1-2 in the tournament.

Manogue held a 3-0 lead going into the bottom of the second inning, when Matt Rutledge hit a long-distance two-run homer to cut the lead to 3-2.

Rutledge went 2-for-3, with 2 runs batted in and scored one run.

Manogue then went scored three runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings, respectively.

Carson rallied for a pair of runs in the fifth to cut the lead to 12-5, but Manogue added two more runs in the sixth for the 14-5 lead.

Carson got some offense from several players.

Stone helped his own cause. going 2-for-3, with two stolen bases, one RBI and a run scored.

Tyler Hutchins finished 3-for-4, with an RBI and scored a run.

Markus Adams went 2-for-4, with a double, an RBI and 2 runs.

Drew Good was 1-for-5, but scored three runs and Tommy Preston walked once and scored one run.

Smith was hitless in three at bats, but contributed with a run. as did Brett Valley, who went 2-for-3, with a run scored.

Valerius, who went 2-for-5, added a double, an RBI and also scored a run for the Cardinals, who split a pair of games with South Tahoe and Damonte Ranch on Wednesday.

"We gave ourselves a chance to win," Cook said. "No excuses, but the kids looked a little tired. It didn't seem like we had energy."
