People walking past the Governor's Mansion on Thursday afternoon could easily have imagined they had teleported to Hawaii. It wasn't just the temperature, but hundreds of people in colorful Hawaiian shirts and dresses on the back lawn, some drinking mai tais or pina coladas and nearly all wearing leis.
The occasion was a luau-themed recognition banquet for Retired and Senior Volunteer Program volunteers.
Certificates of appreciation were handed out to several of the volunteers in the 15-county program, which provides help to hundreds of organizations, including those that help homebound seniors.
The volunteers in the program provide thousands of hours of volunteer service.
Fran McClain, who retired from the state Health Department last year, became an RSVP volunteer shortly thereafter.
"I needed something to do," said McClain, who donates her time at The Carson Tahoe Cancer Center and expects to also volunteer at the sheriff's department when it moves into its new building.
